Who we are, what we do, and our leadership
Child Welfare and Adoption Society (CWAS), is a charitable Non-Governmental Organization Reg. S.5914/504 located at Nsambya, plot No. 472 along Nsambya Estate Road in Makindye Division, Kampala District. CWAS operates under the auspices of Kampala Archdiocese. The Organisation takes care of neglected, abandoned and orphaned children in CWAS-Nsambya Babies Home, CWAS-Kankobe Children's Home and CWAS-Nateete Family Group, nurturing them to grow into responsible adults, co-ordinated by CWAS-Head Office.
It was established in 1958 as Catholic Child Welfare and Adoption Society by Fr. Rawlinson, a Mill Hill Missionary priest, the then a Secretary General Uganda Episcopal Conference, to coordinate the social work activities in Catholic child care institutions in Uganda. Since these children were from different backgrounds: culture, tribes and religious denominations, the name changed from Catholic Child Welfare and Adoption Society to Child Welfare and Adoption Society in 1964.
As the Society had similar Homes in other parts of Uganda, due to financial constraints, in 1986 the Bishops of the Uganda Episcopal Conference agreed that each Diocese looks after the affairs of its local children. Consequently, CWAS remained under Kampala Archdiocese.
Child Welfare and Adoption Society is headed by the Board of Governors appointed by Kampala Archdiocese and its management is under the Director who is proposed by the Superior General of the Sister of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Reparatrix (IHMR)- Ggogonya Sisters and approved by the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Kampala. Each Home is headed by an Administrator also proposed by the Superior General of the IHMR and Good Samaritan Sisters (GSS) respectively. Each Home has a management committee appointed by CWAS Board of Governors.
